We are publishing our first story. First of all, the shawarma is truly golden. Secondly, the story has a moral. Enjoy the read!

The Shawarma Story

In 2023, I ventured into small business in the fast-food sector by opening a franchise café specializing in shawarma. At first glance, the idea seemed promising, but in practice, it turned out otherwise. The franchise itself was poorly managed: the owner went bankrupt, the contract terms left much to be desired, and my partner and I picked a less-than-ideal location for the café.

We invested over 6 million rubles into the project, which went toward equipment, renovations, and the launch. However, the business began to falter from the very first months. Employees were unreliable, forcing me to work at the counter myself to try and minimize losses.

In an effort to recover some of the losses, I started looking for additional income streams. Riding the wave of cryptocurrency arbitrage popularity, I decided to try my hand at it. It was a risky move, especially considering that my initial attempts at trading led to further losses.

Nevertheless, P2P trading seemed like a more stable option. I established connections in Belarus, where I opened bank accounts through acquaintances. Funds were transferred to these accounts, and I hoped to build a small "mini-business" out of it. However, this venture also came with its challenges: shrinking spreads, blocked cards, and increasing risks.

One day, while working the café counter, I found myself multitasking—making shawarma and processing payments simultaneously. A regular customer asked me to transfer $2,000 in Belarusian rubles to a specific account. Distracted by orders, I sent the money to the wrong person without double-checking the details. Later, I found out that recovering the funds was impossible.

This mistake added a few gray hairs to my head and taught me a valuable lesson: don’t try to do two things at once in hopes of earning more. In total, I lost over $20,000 due to similar situations.

The shawarma business closed after 14 months, and the entire franchise ceased operations three months later. We lost about $40,000. While arbitrage brought in some income, the combined losses and mistakes painted a far from ideal picture.

Thus ended the story of my "golden shawarma." The lesson I learned: it's better to focus on one thing rather than spreading yourself too thin and losing more than you earn.
